Update your Website’s Navigation – Here’s Why
Update your navigation periodically so visitors can find your new pages.
There are many reasons why you would need to change your websites navigation – and here’s how you can do it yourself.
Sometimes, you may need to remove a page or add an external link to your website. Or perhaps you’ve had customers struggle to find a very business critical page and you need it linking more prominently. Whichever it is, having the tools and knowledge to make these changes yourself is important – especially if the change is time sensitive.
Some common scenarios:
- Unpublish or delete pages.
- Add new pages.
- Improve ease of use.
- Add an external link.
- A legal requirement needs a new ink.
With a simple task like a website menu change, you can feel like a superhero in one small step and open the door for your next project – like creating a new page.
For WordPress, here’s how:
Option 1: Mega Menu
If your website has been built with a mega menu technology, you can easily manage it in one convenient place.
- Login to your website dashboard.
- Visit the home page (frontend).
- Go to “Customise” found in the top toolbar.
- Then, click “Menus” and browse to the menu you wish to edit.
- From here, you can add, remove and alter links around by drag-and-drop.
- You can add links as sub-items to provide a secondary link list.
Option 2: Simple Menus
Sometimes, simple menus are used throughout your website. Usually this is for a fixed layout structure or for policy / legal links within the footer.
- Login to your website dashboard.
- Visit the home page (frontend).
- Go to “Customise” found in the top toolbar.
- Then, click “Menus” and browse to the menu you wish to edit.
- From here, you can add, remove and alter links around by drag-and-drop.
For other websites, here’s how:
Many websites, including basic ones with a few pages, have a content management system (CMS) built behind it. In some cases, you’ll have the option to edit your website navigation.
Have a click around your dashboard area and see if you can locate a button called “customise” or “menus”. It may be worth checking out the official documentation for your CMS (if known)
